Medicine Buddha Practice Having taken the Medicine Buddha Teaching and Empowerment, and based on further study and practice I have included it within the Elemental Healing Triad. For more information see the caption and article to the left. Reiki is a form of Japanese Stress Reduction whereby the hands are placed on specific areas of the body to facilitate the bodies natural healing ability. The Reiki Practitioner goes through training and receives what is called an "Attunement" from a Reiki Master. The hands of the practitioner have then become energized. Distance Healing is a form of healing that is done with the practitioner and recipient in two different locations. The practitioner either writes down the name of the recipient or uses a picture. The name or picture is placed under a healing symbol and the practitioner places their energized hands over it. For a Reiki Session click here. POLARITY THERAPY Polarity Therapy is a method of balancing the energy fields of the body and the elements of Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. The purpose is to restore the body to its natural balance. Each element correlates to one of the bodies major systems. This is a powerful method of healing and stress reduction. Diet and specific exercises called polar energetics are also used. |
| MEDICINE BUDDHA “Although all the Buddhas have the same nature, each has a particular power. When we recite the mantra, rays of light emanate from the heart of the Buddha, like a hundred rising suns, curing all the diseases and obscurations of beings and even their causes. By the power of this practice may all suffering and problems of the beings be removed by the power of the Medicine Buddha. Recite mantra while concentrating on the rays of light. At the end of the practice by the power of these rays of light, sufferings are completely removed, like darkness is dispelled by a torch. At the end of the recitation of mantra be free of the concept that beings and Buddhas are different.” From the Root Text by H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche The Vajrayana practice of Medicine Buddha is often sought by those who work in healing professions and of course by people suffering physical illness, but it should not be seen in a narrow context. The practice of performing the various rituals connected with Medicine Buddha and the recitation and associated altruistic attitude and intent connected with the mantra of the deity can bestow many benefits upon the practitioner beyond the realm of mere physical and mental wellness. The Medicine Buddha practice transmitted during the weekend seminars in September 2007 was revealed by Guru Padmasambhava directly to the mind of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche (1904-1987), who was a recognized and prophesized terton (revealer of hidden precious teachings that will benefit the beings of that time and beyond). The practice outlined is extremely concise and potent, able to radiate multitudes of blessings and realizations for those who practice it for the benefit of all sentient beings. Medicine and healing within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition always begins with an understanding of the realized wisdom or enlightened mind as the basic uncontaminated space from which to understand how the everyday body and mind may manifest what we commonly refer to as illness. The types of outer manifestations of illness are many: physical illness, psychological illness, mental illness, planetary and psychic illness, demonic illness, spiritual illness, illness of unvirtuous actions, karmic illness, or illness caused immediately by negative actions, environmental imbalances, and or wrong/poor nutrition. In addition to these there are illnesses caused by “negatively motivated” magic such as possession of life force or control of vital fluids and essence. To begin understanding the causes and conditions manifesting as these various illnesses we need to remember that the Buddha provided eighty-four thousand teachings to address every possibility of our obscurations and delusion. These eighty- four thousand teachings can be divided into three sections of twenty-eight thousand, each of which has an outer, an inner, and a secret aspect or level. When viewed from the perspective of medicine and healing, the “outer” level of the three divisions represents twenty-eight thousand teachings on wind, twenty- eight thousand on bile, and twenty-eight thousand on phlegm. Imbalances among these three humors (wind, bile, and phlegm) “present” as what we commonly refer to as “illness”. Elimination or reduction of illness at this outer level is referred to as “healing”. At the “inner” level the three divisions are referred to and manifest as the three “nadis”: nerves, wind, and essence (in Tibetan, the ‘tsa’, ‘lung’ and ‘thigle’). Essentially this inner level also includes the divisions of the three channels: central, left, and right, which circulate the “red mother” and “white father” essences that purify our basic psychological, emotional, and habitual dualistic thought tendencies of ignorance/confusion, hatred/aversion and desire/attraction. At this inner level, illness is understood as existing or manifesting within the realm of mind and its projections. Healing at the inner level is the direct experience of the nature of the Buddha’s compassion. This luminosity, with its natural radiating and absorbing qualities, is the “heart essence” of healing. At the “secret level”, these three divisions are no longer separated, but rather manifested as the undivided direct experience of primordial nature of mind, also referred to as the “luminosity of mind” or the “infinite atom”. As the “infinite atom”, this primordial luminosity is a manifestation and ultimate realization of the “five elements”, earth, fire, water, air, and space. At the secret level, this Medicine Buddha practice serves to unify these infinite and spontaneously moving and manifesting “atoms” or “elements” into the primordial luminosity of mind. Illness at the secret level is really understood as the inhibition or “non-movement” of the five “atoms” or “elements”. Healing at the secret level therefore consists of simply resting in the undivided and infinite luminosity of the primordial nature of mind: meditation. This particular practice based on the inseparability of wisdom and compassion (the luminosity of mind), encourages our full development as compassionate human beings, completely interconnected with all sentient beings. One can become free from disease and obstacles, whether outer, inner, or secret. One can lead a long life based on wisdom and skillful means. The natural display of wisdom and compassion is a balanced mind flowing in peace and harmony without any conflicts within or among the outer, inner, and secret levels. © www.lama-rinchen.org - November 2007 |
